Good Stuff
I bought this to mix in equal amounts with vermiculite for a growing medium. Product works as expected in regards to aeration/water retention (when mixed with vermiculite), if you are going to use as your medium you definately want to use vermiculite with it as one procides the aeration you need and the other provides the water retention.Be advised, if you use products like these buy a little cotton mask to wear while you first get it set up....it can be harmful over time to breathe the dust they will put off....once you moisten it down that issue goes away. Make sure to wash your hands when done handling as well.

Great for Growing Mushrooms
I grow Shiitaki mushrooms and this stuff is great for the budding chambers. It is nice to find an Organic option without a bunch of chemicals that kill my shrooms.

Perlite
I don't think there's much to say about a bag of perlite. I'm a beginning gardener and used the perlite in a mix for seed-starting and for lighting up the soil for particular plants.

What can I say? It's organic, it's amorphous volcanic glass. It's exactly as described. Great price - much better than any local options.

Customer Review

Fantastic rooting medium for a fantastic price
I bought 4 packs of these from my local Home Depot (NYC) at about $7 each. For shoppers who are unfamiliar, perlite is volcanic glass rapidly heated to about 1700 F. The trapped water molecules turn to steam and rapidly expand, causing the pellets to pop like popcorn. Perlite looks just like styrofoam bits and is just about as light, but is crunchy -- you can easily crush the pellets with your fingers. It has a number of industrial applications, but for gardening, it is used as a rooting medium and for soil amelioration (by mixing some of it in to improve drainage and aeration). Perlite is also excellent at retaining water and acts as a good insulator, which is important for root growth and seeds needing warmth to germinate. It is non-toxic, odorless, chemically-inert, and sterile. These qualities make it perfect for rooting plant cuttings because it packs loosely, allowing for better air flow and drainage, and it inhibits the growth of bacteria and...

Great Stuff!
The MiracleGro Perlite I ordered came in about 3 days and has been very helpful for my potted plants! It helps a lot with soil compaction in containers. Also this mixture of perlite is infused with miraclegro plant food so it helps keep your plants healthy too. The 8 Quart bag is more than enough to fill 3 or 4 8in by 8in pots. When I mixed it with miraclegro potting mix it made a great combo for potted plants. Also the perlite has a good size for indoor growing, the chucks are not too big or too small. I would suggest always wearing gloves when handling perlite.

Quality!!
This product is perfect to be used on mixes for carnivorus plants, its hard to find on the market perlite free of any aditives but this one offers a great price and great quality, I will reorder as soon I need more with no doubt.

Fertilizer free, unlike the Scott's perlite!
I bought this to mix with Sphagnum moss for medium to re-pot some of my carnivorous plants in. My carnivorous plants require nutrient-free medium and would of died if I hadn't noticed that Scott's perlite had some very small font that said "added fertilizer"

ANOTHER FINE PRODUCT FROM HOFFMAN:
What can I say? It's perlite. Hoffman's grade is more consistent than some. It is a great addition to a soil mix.

BUY Black Gold 1390102 12-Quart Perlite Soil

Where Can I buy Perlite

5 cu ft bag of it and buy the bag of miracle grow perlite. easiest way to check your soil is just poke your pointer finger in a couple inches if its moist it dont need water if not give it water. instead of putting this mixture of soil and perlite in that pot put it in the ground. water it with your water at the said ph when it gets dry. mix the entire bag of perlite into that bag of soil. for you im going to suggest, just because its your first grow and you ARE gonna learn alot from it. you should use miracle grow potting soil. this watering method "cools" the soil down just enough so it dont burn your seedling. if you're using tap water fill your jug and let it stand for atleast 24hrs. if you're gonna put this plant outside skip the pot and dig yourself a hole 2ft wide by 2 ft deep. Ok i've looked at all your past posts (8 of them) looks like you got yourself a ph test kit. ok now that you have soil and your seedling outside in the hole you are set.

And i know some one might say just buy the growing medium from matt and steve and i have its great stuff but i rather spend 30$ or more to get a bulk amount of it. Because every 2 weeks or so im always buying Venus flytraps x. x bad habbit. Hello i was going to put this in growing medium section of the forum but wasn't sure if it was right place, sorry for putting this in wrong section x. x, any ways to the point.

I finally found a bag of Espoma-brand perlite today that's 100% pure with nothing else added to it, so at least now I could try the 50/50 blend. What benefits would the sand provide that the 50/50 blend doesn't.
